Artist’s Statement

From the time that I first held a crayon I’ve been fascinated with making images; sketchbooks and pencils have been constant companions throughout my life. During college, after accepting my art practice as something real and integral to my experience, paints and pigments took their place in that pantheon as well. I’ve found the spontaneous and delicate nature of watercolor to be particularly satisfying.

Centering on themes of body, nature, and myth, I explore the interweaving of the natural environment that sustains us with the stories that ignite our spirit. Field sketches and botanical drawings, bookplates and anatomical studies, along with a bevy of great artists and poets both modern and antique, are among the threads of inspiration you might catch glimpse of in my work.

Typical media used in my work are watercolors, inks, pencils and gouache.

To quote a great lady,

"Much Madness is divinest Sense—

To a discerning Eye—"

I hope you find that madness here.

Artist Bio

Hi there! My name is Thorn, I’m a queer artist with a touch of ADHD (just a sprinkle✨), born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska where my studio is still based today. At the moment, I work mainly in watercolors and pencil.

I’m an avid gardener, and a haunter of libraries. For work, I manage projects for a small ADHD advocacy startup.

in 2011, I graduated from Dana College in Blair with a BA in Fine Arts, but after showing in some small local galleries felt the struggle of balancing my day job and this work. This year marks the first time I’ve shown in a public space in almost 15 years.

Lately I’ve been focused on making complex, poster-like illustrations for some of my favorite media; I’m calling it the Love Letters series, and am enjoying flexing my composition and figure drawing skills while still weaving in the botanicals so integral to my previous work.
